Overview
Every game has it’s own requirements, but generally more expensive is better right? Custom building a budget gaming PC is easy! There are few things our experts know that might help you find the perfect price oriented parts for your new PC!
The current Budget King
AMD has been pushing its way back into the forefront of the entry and mid-level PC gaming space. Its rival Intel has been providing a good option for gamers looking for a deal with the Pentium G4560 and its low price of $76.99 Canadian. This chip had a strong presence early 2017, but in 2018 it has some stiff competition.
Enter the Ryzen 3 2200G, an APU designed with your wallet in mind. By combining the best of AMD CPU and GPU technologies into a single chip commonly called an APU it is a great value. A quad-core, 4 thread chip with a low 65 Watt TDP and a surprisingly high 3.5Ghz base clock and 3.7Ghz boost clock at stock settings. A little more performance can be squeezed out by overclocking the unlocked frequencies even with its included heat sink. The integration of Vega 8 graphics processing into die can support up to 2GB of system memory but default to 512MB.
These specs might not sound impressive but compared to Intel HD integrated graphics the 2200G’s graphical prowess is best in class. This little powerhouse is able to play well-optimized titles at 60 Frames Per Second (FPS) and even most modern games if you are willing to turn the settings down to meet the chip halfway.
In basic price, to performance comparisons, the Ryzen 3 2200G can’t be beaten. AMD has been able to push the price point of this single chip down to an impressively low level of $99 US ($124.99 Canadian). While it’s not going to stack up well against much higher priced options it’s a bargain. The 2200G allows for easy access to esports titles like Overwatch, League of Legends, Dota 2, CS:GO, Fortnite, and Rocket League. You can view a comprehensive rundown of the chip and its overclocking potential by Digital Foundry.
The 2200G offers some options for future upgrades but it clearly shines as a single chip solution. Adding in a more powerful graphics card like a GTX 1070 will improve frame rates in games but your upward headroom is small. More expensive options like an Intel i5 8600K or Ryzen 5 1600 may be a better choice if you’re looking for future-proofing. This powerful APU in a small form factor case might be just the upgrade you’re looking for!
